Tim hated the term "dating." He felt like it was an activity that kids enjoyed but it seemed pretty juvenile for a man of 53. He had been married for years, to his high school sweetheart, Angela. She had passed away five years ago and Tim hadn't had much social interaction with women since that time.

Some of his buddies at work would set him up on an occasional blind date but Tim was never comfortable with the winking and nudging and looks that went along with it. It seemed that most of the guys thought he needed sexual relationships not personal ones. Sure, he'd engaged in a few one-night stands, mostly to quell the physical needs he'd built up since losing Angela, but most of the time, he preferred to stay home. dating just never seemed to be one of his priorities.

As he loaded the last of the dishes into the dishwasher, Tim's cell phone rang. He checked the display and realized it was Janice, his neighbour two doors down. "Hi Janice," he answered, "How are you?" Janice assured him she was fine but could use a little help. It seemed that one of her upstairs windows was painted shut and she wondered if he could drop by and help her to get it open. Since he had no plans for the evening, Tim offered to drop by about thirty minutes later. "Thanks, Tim!" Janice replied, seeming very grateful.

When she opened her door to him, those thirty minutes later, Tim was struck by how truly gorgeous Janice was... and wondered how he'd never noticed before. They'd been neighbours for years but were never really close friends. After getting the window open, Janice asked Tim how he would feel about having a glass of wine with her. A little surprised, but definitely interested, Tim accepted graciously.

Sitting in her comfortable living room, on the couch in front of the fireplace, Janice asked Tim whether or not he was dating anyone. He explained that he wasn't and told her he'd found it hard to date since losing Angela. Janice said she certainly understood since she had hardly been out since her relationship with her ex-boyfriend had ended six months ago. "The thing is, Tim," she continued, "what I actually wondered is if you'd be interested in dating me." After the words were spoken, Janice said nothing more. She looked deeply into Tim's eyes, over the edge of her wine glass, then softly licked her lips. Tim swallowed hard and couldn't believe the fortune that had just landed in his lap. A beautiful woman like Janice, completely free and available, was taking the bull by the horns and just asking for what she wanted. "Never mind dating!" Tim thought to himself, "This is about to be far more appealing!"
